CHARACTER INFO.
NAME: Rey
CANON: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (+ Before The Awakening tie-in material)
AGE: 19
APPEARANCE: [x]
CANON POINT: (Almost) end of movie, having just left the Resistance base on D'Qar to go fetch Luke Skywalker from his inconveniently long camping trip.

BACKGROUND: Rey @Wookieepedia

PERSONALITY: Rey is a survivor, but she's also a dreamer. Growing up on her own on a harsh desert planet, Rey's typical day to day work and interactions make her out to be a hard and brutally practical by necessity: she's slow to trust the intentions of others, has a keen sense of the environment and dangers it might hold, is defensive of her personal space, and brusque about small talk. She's as likely to shout at you and whack you upside the head as she is to hold a respectable conversation, and she isn't a fool - Rey's entire life is built on knowing the value of things, on frugality, and in general protecting what little she has and doing her best to grow her resources instead of shrinking them. In a word, most of Rey's interactions tend to be strictly economical. She doesn't have time for strangers and finds conversation with people she doesn't know is often dangerous. She is abrupt by default and constantly weighing pros and cons.

--That said, Rey is also confident enough in her own abilities that she sometimes decides to go with the risky (but potentially profitable) approach as opposed to ones that are safer. In Before the Awakening, she takes a gamble to track down a glimmer of salvage on the horizon despite the fact that doing so means exposing herself to the dangers of night on Jakku; on Han Solo's freighter, she chooses to act against the gang leaders Han's facing down rather than stay quiet and keep her head low. When it comes to her own self-preservation in a literal sense, Rey believes in her ability to persist - to survive - to come out of a scrap on top or at least to fight another day. She rarely doubts herself; she's been doing this for hundreds, thousands of days (it's been fourteen years since her family left her on Jakku) and she's been subsisting so far.

However, confidence in her coping habits doesn't actually translate into a sense of self-worth. Rey is, and has been for as long as she can remember, deeply lonely. As a result of her abandonment on Jakku and a decided lack of any notable companions in her life there, she commonly views herself as just one grain of sand in a desert, just one more scavenger - a nobody. The fact that her life has been upended first by being targeted by the First Order, then by discovering her Force sensitivity on Takodana, and her part in the hunt for Luke Skywalker doesn't seem entirely real. She even balks from it at first, running from Maz and the call of the Skywalker lightsaber; it isn't until she's forced to escape captivity and defend Finn's life and her own that she opens herself to connecting with the call of the Force. In her heart, she knows it's easier and safer to be no one; she's sluggish to think of herself as important when she could be maintaining the status quo because change means losing a grip on knowing how to handle herself, and if she doesn't have that then what's left? Just a scared, lonely girl who is desperate for a personal connection.

Because while she's used to disappointment (when Devi and Strunk make off with the Ghtroc ship she's painstakingly restored in Awakening, her response basically boils down to: WELP, SHOULDA SEEN THAT ONE COMING), at her core Rey is defined by the hopes she pins herself on. She spends fourteen years on a desert planet hoping so fervently that her parents will come back for her that she never seriously considers escaping the life she's been thrust in; she dreams of X-wing pilots and Jedi Knights and the (in)famous Han Solo and is head over heels with the Resistance (when Finn claims to be a Resistance member, she lights up). Those hopes mean that though Rey's lived a hard life, she hasn't been bittered: she's still capable of great kindness (rescuing BB-8 and helping him off world) and is deeply invested when she does find a true friend in Finn. While her self-preservation instincts are incredibly high, her loyalty to the people who have demonstrated that they care for her is absolute even if it means sacrificing something of herself for it. When it comes to taking up the lightsaber and wielding the Force to protect Finn from Kylo Ren, she does it willingly even though both frighten her - and it's because Finn came back for her when no one else ever did.

In the end, Rey thinks critically and cares deeply. Though she's been a loner by necessity for a huge portion of her life, her desire is to connect with others and protect the interests of those she cares for most in the galaxy even if it means being thrust into a conflict older than she is.

ABILITIES:
SCAVENGER - Making a living on Jakku is tough and Rey's adapted to it by learning how to evaluate and barter for goods, how to survive in harsh conditions, and by excelling at things like free climbing, being able to speak a number of alien languages, and general mechanical engineering.

MELEE FIGHTER - Rey can handle herself in a fight and is skilled with the use of her staff in combat. Her abilities with the staff has some crossover with other close combat melee weapons (like, say, lightsabers) but her technique tends to still look like she's swinging around a staff.

MECHANIC - She knows her tech well enough to rebuild, refurbish, and retrofit and is a skilled enough mechanic to have built her own speeder from scratch. Having spend a a huge swath of her life digging around in ships, she's more than familiar with how tab a fits into slot b and is generally resourceful about making do with limited tools and resources. Sure, it's nice to have all the working parts - but if she can make it work with only half? Well that's fine too.

PILOT - One of the few pieces of tech Rey had on Jakku was a refurbished flight simulator. She's logged hours on various ship types and flown through multiple scenarios and while her handling of vehicles in reality can be a little sketchy under pressure, she's daring and knows enough to not fly headlong into a mountain.

FORCE SENSITIVE - Maybe it's something to do with her centered sense of self or maybe it's something to do with Rey's mysterious past that she doesn't remember, but Rey is Force sensitive and capable of wielding it with some proficiency when she absolutely needs to. She can 'Jedi mind trick' individuals into following basic orders and tapping into the Force enables her to be more proficient than usual with the lightsaber in addition to telepathically calling the saber to her hand. Her force abilities are by no means perfect and tend to fail more often than they work, often only coming through in periods of extreme duress.

INVENTORY:
x1 slate grey outfit ~ensemble~
x1 staff (for combat and walking)
x1 leather satchel containing:

WRITING SAMPLES.
NETWORK SAMPLE:
[Look, a video! Unfortunately it's mostly centered on Rey's eyebrows and above; she's used to droids and holotech that know a thing or two about focusing on the subject - holding a piece of enchanted jewelry at just the right angle isn't a skill she's developed yet.]

My name's Rey. I'm good with parts and scrap. If you have something you need repaired or built, I can do it. Either provide the material or pay me to find it; I'm fine with either. Payment is half now, half on completion. I take-- [a flicker of hesitation. The serious line of her eyebrows falters. What's the currency called again? She can't remember.] --credits of any kind or trade for goods I like.

[A beat. She has a personal wish list of things she wants, but that would be complicated and probably too long of a message for anyone to bother with. So:]

Alright, that's all.
